Your Guide To Pride
WAXOH! is proud to announce that we are media sponsors of this year’s NYC Pride.
Here’s what you need to know!
This June, it’s not just Pride month in NYC, it’s WorldPride. That’s right. People from all over the globe are coming to celebrate, remember, love, learn, be seen, and be heard.
50 Years Since Stonewall
On the morning of June 28th 1969, the police raided the Stonewall Inn and began arresting queer and trans patrons. This was a regular occurrence, but this time, people got mad and fought back. Sylvia Rivera and Marsha P. Johnson — both iconic trans activists who have since passed away — were on the frontlines of this battle. The police wound up barricading themselves inside the bar, and that day is widely considered to be the turning point in the gay rights movement.
Stonewall is still a functioning bar, and it and the surrounding square are landmark spaces. It’s where Edith Windsor addressed thousands of people in 2013, after the Supreme Court overturned key sections of the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA), a pivotal moment in marriage equality.
